I've used Braun shavers for at least 20 years; My first was a System 1-2-3. Today my everyday shaver is a current-model Series 5 550cc-4 Braun Series 5-550cc Shaver System, Black and Silver that I'm very happy with. I'm not crazy about taking it on business trips though, so I've been thinking about getting a different, less expensive shaver to take with me on the road. I have a Braun MobileShave BRAUN POCKET SHAVER,2xAA,CAP - WASHABLE, M60B, but I'm not thrilled with how it works on my neck, because especially after using it for a couple days it leaves some longish hairs that it seems incapable of cutting.So I decided to try this new Series 1 195s-1. It looks like the older Series 3 shaver that's still sold in Europe as the SmartControl Classic. It uses a three-section head (two foils and center trimmer) similar to the Series 5, but it's fixed in place and doesn't "swing" to follow your face like the one on the Series 5. It has Braun's "SmartFoil" pattern that is really good and so much better than the older-style foils. Note that the latest Series 5 shavers come with the newer "OptiFoil." The foil and cutter are not combined into a cassette like the current Series 3 and 7. I think this is a better setup since it is easier to clean.The 195s-1 is brand new as I type this (July 21, 2011) and info about it is tough to find online. Mine has arrived and here are the particulars. It has Ni-MH batteries and Braun says a 1-hour charge is good for up to 40 minutes of shaving (The first charge out of the package is 4 hours, but subsequent ones are an hour.) It has one green charging LED, but no red LED to let you know the battery is getting low (the manual shows a model 199s-1 that has a red LED too.) The shaver can be used on the cord if the charge runs down.The 195s-1 is made in China, and is Braun Type 5743 (the manual also lists it as Type 5742). The trimmer slides up to turn on and is straight like a Series 1-150, not set at 90 degrees like the latest Series 3 & 5 shavers. It has a metal power button on the side of the shaver. The body is all black, in a combination of hard and sorta rubbery soft-touch plastics. It uses Braun replacement foil and cutter 30B.The shaver comes with a charging cord, a simple clear-plastic snap-on cap to protect the foils, a cleaning brush, and a small bottle of oil to use if you wash the shaver under the tap.So far I've only shaved with it a couple times, but my first impressions are very positive. It shaves very close with no skin irritation. It might not be quite as close as my Series 5, but the difference is slight. Another early positive is that the 195s-1 might actually allow me to finish shaving quicker than my 550cc-4 with fewer passes before I finish. It cleans up easily under running water. I wish it was made in Germany, but it does seem to be well constructed and the motor sounds strong. I'll update this review as I use the shaver more.Update July 30, 2011: I've found that a Braun replacement hard plastic travel case for the SmartControl3 (Braun Part Number: 7 030 602) fits the Series 1 195s-1 properly, and is a much better travel solution than the snap-on cap that's supplied with this shaver. The case is very affordable online, and even comes with a much nicer old-style Braun cleaning brush than the one included in the 195s-1. This shaver also fits in the zipper-style travel case included with my Series 5 550cc-4.Update #2 September 9, 2011: OK, after using this shaver regularly for more than a month I have to report that I'm really impressed. It shaves very well, dry or with foam Nivea Sensitive Shave Foam 200ml shaving cream by Nivea. The shave is at least as good as I get with my Series 5 550cc-4, very close and no irritation. The battery is good for at least 5-6 shaves, and that's after only a handful of charging cycles so it might improve with more use. But I really think this shaver needs a red LED to let you now the battery is running low...I've been spoiled by the multiple battery-status LEDs on my Series 5. The 195s-1's lack of the red LED is my biggest disappointment. This shaver's price is attractive, and I don't think the lack of the Clean & Charge base is that big of a deal. It might even be a positive, since it is easy to rinse under the tap and clean with Braun's brush as needed. If you're looking at foil shavers, this Series 1 195s-1 is worth serious consideration. So far, I haven't seen it in any stores in my area (northern Chicago suburbs). I still like my Series 5, but I'm really happy I bought this one too. Highly recommended.

Braun 1 Series 195s-1 Shaver, Black I bought this shaver to replace a Braun 6525 which I really liked. Unfortunately, after many years of service the batteries would no longer hold a charge. The 195s looked like a similar shaver, but it has a couple of deficiencies compared to the 6525 as follows: 1) the shaving head does not pivot so it does not follow facial contours as easily. You must constantly try to keep the shaver oriented to your face or it won't shave as well. 2) the trimmer is not angled 90 degrees like on the 6525. This makes trimming much more difficult. Other than these two complaints I'm generally happy with the shaver, but next time I will look for the 90 degree trimmer and the pivoting head.

I have soft skin, and it is difficult to get a close shave. I had a previous version of this foil shaver which I left at a hotel. I bought this one, and it is unbelievable. Save money, avoid the more expensive models, such as a tilting head. You can tilt your hand. As would be said on a popular investment program- BUY BUY BUY!!
